Cropping is choosing

A good crop removes what distracts and brings the subject closer. On a product photo, tighten the frame until the object fills most of it. On a portrait, leave a little room above the head, never below the chin.

Social media formats

• 1:1 for a profile photo or a square post.
• 4:5 for Instagram's portrait format, the one that takes up the most screen in the feed.
• 9:16 for stories and vertical videos.
• 16:9 for a video thumbnail or a banner.
• 3:2 the native format of most cameras.

What this tool does not do

This tool does not read HEIC photos (the default on some iPhones): convert them to JPEG from the device first. On a PNG, compression changes the format rather than truly reducing the size, since the browser cannot produce a reduced-palette PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Does cropping reduce quality?

The cut itself doesn't touch any pixel that's kept. However, cropping a small portion of an already small image leaves few pixels: the result will look blurry once enlarged. Always start from the file at full resolution.

Can I crop several images at once?

No, and that's deliberate: a crop is decided image by image. To apply the same dimensions to a whole batch, use the resize tool instead.

Are my files sent to a server?

No: processing happens entirely in your browser, on your device. No file is ever transmitted to a server, at any point.
