Convert a Video to GIF is a free tool that runs entirely in your browser, with no data ever sent to a server. Turn a video clip into an animated GIF, with adjustable size and smoothness.

The settings that determine file size

A GIF is never compressed like a video: every frame counts for almost its full weight. Three settings control the result: width, which affects size quadratically; frames per second, which acts linearly; and color count, which mostly affects how gradients render.

Why so few colors?

The GIF format only knows 256 colors per frame, versus 16 million for a video. A gradient or a sky may therefore show slight banding: that's a limitation of the format, not of this tool.

What this tool does not do

This tool only reads video formats your browser can already decode. The result is always produced in WebM format, whatever the original format, and the tab must stay active until processing finishes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does generation take?

The computation runs entirely on your processor, in a few seconds for a short clip. A long clip or a high width requires more time and memory.

Is the sound kept?

No: the GIF format doesn't support sound, whatever tool is used to produce it.

Are my files sent to a server?

No: processing happens entirely in your browser, on your device. No file is ever transmitted to a server, at any point.
