What a photo contains, besides the image

The EXIF format stores, alongside the pixels, the date and time of the shot, the camera brand and model, the lens settings, and often the exact GPS coordinates of the location. This information stays in the file even after cropping or sending it by messaging, as long as it isn't explicitly removed.

Why remove it before sharing

Publishing a photo taken at your home, with its GPS coordinates intact, is the same as publicly stating your address. That's the most common case where this cleanup helps: before a classified ad, a forum, or a social network that doesn't remove it itself.

How it works here

The image is decoded then redrawn identically into a new file: the same mechanism as the other tools on this page, with no visual transformation. Since a new file is built from scratch, none of the old metadata ends up in it.

What this tool does not do

This tool does not read HEIC photos (the default on some iPhones): convert them to JPEG from the device first. On a PNG, compression changes the format rather than truly reducing the size, since the browser cannot produce a reduced-palette PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Does the photo's quality change?

At 95%, the difference is invisible to the eye on a photo. A lower setting slightly reduces the file size, at the cost of a more visible loss.

Does PNG have metadata?

Less than JPEG in general, but some editors add software information to it. The cleanup also works on this format.

Are my files sent to a server?

No: processing happens entirely in your browser, on your device. No file is ever transmitted to a server, at any point.
