How much to leave, country by country

Customs vary widely. In the United States, 18 to 20 % is expected in restaurants, since server pay depends directly on it. In the United Kingdom, 10 to 12.5 % is common and often already added to the bill. In France, Belgium and Switzerland, service is included by law and a tip is a thank-you. In Japan, it can make staff genuinely uncomfortable.

Splitting a bill without falling out

An equal split is the fastest, but it charges the same to the person who ordered a salad and the one who took the full menu. Rounding each share up to the next euro, offered here, avoids impossible small change and leaves a little extra for the staff.

What this tool does not do

This tool splits the bill equally. It does not divide dish by dish, does not handle taxes added afterwards such as US sales tax, and knows nothing about service charges already included on some bills.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tip worked out before or after tax?

The most common practice is to base it on the pre-tax amount, though many people simply start from the displayed total. In France the question does not arise: prices are quoted with all taxes included.

Should I tip for counter service?

Nothing requires it. In countries where tipping is expected, it is often halved for counter service compared with table service.

Is my data sent to a server?

No: the text you type or paste is processed entirely in your browser, on your device. It is never transmitted to a server.

Do I need an account or an install?

No: the tool works directly on this page, with no sign-up and no installation.
