Straight and mixed commission

The most common commission is a percentage of the revenue brought in. Many contracts add a flat bonus per signed deal, rewarding the number of sales as much as their size. This tool computes both, together or separately.

On revenue or on margin

A commission based on revenue pushes for volume; based on margin, it pushes to defend prices. The second approach stops a salesperson from discounting a deal just to collect their share, but it assumes the margin is known and shared.

What is left for the company

The amount shown as the remainder is simply the sale minus the commission. It is not profit: the cost of the product, payroll charges on the pay and collected VAT have not been taken out.

What this tool does not do

This tool applies a single rate. It does not handle progressive tiers, accelerators past a target, commissions split between several salespeople, or clawbacks on unpaid invoices.

Is commission worked out on the amount before or after tax?

On the amount before tax, in nearly every contract. VAT is collected on behalf of the state: it was never company revenue, so it cannot serve as the basis for pay.

How do I handle a rate that changes by tier?

Compute each band separately with its own rate, then add the results. That is the method used by most tiered compensation plans.

Is my data sent to a server?

No: the text you type or paste is processed entirely in your browser, on your device. It is never transmitted to a server.
