Word and character counter

Paste or type a text : word count, character count, sentence count and estimated reading time update as you type.

Word and character counter is a free tool that runs entirely in your browser, with no data ever sent to a server. Words, characters, sentences and reading time, counted live.

What this counter is for

Staying within a character limit for a meta description, a tweet or a caption, aiming for a precise article length, or simply checking a text's length before sending it : this counter gives every one of these figures at once, with no tab to switch.

How words are counted

A word is any run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. Text pasted with formatting (a table, a list) may therefore count a few more words than expected, if extra spaces slipped in along the way.

What this tool does not do

This tool only performs the calculation described above, without checking how you intend to use the result. There is no limit set by the tool itself : the only constraint is your device's memory.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text sent anywhere while I type?

No, the count happens entirely on the page, on every keystroke. Nothing is recorded, even if the text holds sensitive information.

Why does the sentence count look approximate?

Sentences are detected by their closing punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation mark). An abbreviation followed by a period, like "Mr.", can therefore be wrongly counted as the end of a sentence.

Do I need to create an account or install anything?

No : the tool works directly on this page, with no sign-up and no install.
