How English builds numbers

English stays regular above twenty: each ten has its own word, then units are hyphenated onto it, as in seventy-one. Hundreds, thousands, millions and billions simply stack, which makes the rules far simpler than in French.

Where it is needed

Filling in a cheque is the main use, since banks require the amount in words. Contracts, deeds and formal invoices often ask for the same, so a figure cannot be altered after signing.

What this tool does not do

This tool handles whole numbers up to billions. It does not deal with decimals, fractions or ordinals such as "first" or "second".

Frequently asked questions

Should there be an "and" after hundreds?

British usage writes one hundred and twenty, American usage often drops the "and". This tool includes it, which is the safer form on a cheque and is understood everywhere.

Are hyphens required?

Yes, between tens and units: twenty-one, seventy-nine. Everything else stays as separate words.

Is my data sent to a server?
